Engine Modelling and Simulation

Work on the simulations behind Team Bath Rocket’s rocket engine, modelling complex propulsion systems and helping inform design decisions.

The role will involve:

  • Thermodynamic and engine simulation;
  • Modelling real and supercritical gases;
  • Reaction and combustion modelling;
  • Validating simulations against test data and component CFD;
  • Modelling rocket injection characteristics;
  • Working alongside the Propulsion Team on testing and engine development;
  • Validating simulation through real-life testing.

Work will generally be completed on MATLAB and Simulink, with some potential for applying Python.

Relevant Skills

Required:

  • Understanding of basic simulation techniques;
  • Basic MATLAB and Simulink understanding.

Beneficial

  • Knowledge of Python
  • Experience with thermodynamic simulation
  • Understanding of real-gas and supercritical-fluid behaviour
  • CFD knowledge

This year, we’ll be building on an existing model, with a focus on improving accuracy, validating against experimental data, and adapting the model for new engine designs.
